Pentecost (Acts Frontispiece)

A gold column of fire and smoke rises in the center, with the moon on the left and the sun on the right. Streaks of flames from the heavens dart about, pelting the earth with “tongues, as of fire”; there is hope for those who repent and are baptized. At the lower right, the keys of Peter symbolize the union of the church in heaven with the church on earth. Saint John’s Abbey Church (black triangles) emerges from the golden city of Jerusalem, and the spirit-filled, flag-waving crowd in the foreground was based on a picture of spectators at a Saint John’s University football game.
